Soil and Sun
The space between the bastion of San Giacomo and the entrance to the white marbleVenetian gate, before becoming a community garden, was the boundary between city andcountryside, between inside and outside, above and below, between rock walls andtree-lined slopes, the backdrop for daily comings and goings and a lookout point fornon-existent attacks, but also an air-raid shelter, a place for Sunday walks, a mulberry grove,a vineyard and a clandestine tavern. The Soil and Sun group, together with Lorto and L'impronta, will work on episodicrelationships, through the maintenance, care and invention of points and areas that attemptto recount the special nature of a place that is well known yet half-hidden behind walls andbuttresses. We will try to relate sensitively to the majesty of the architecture that surrounds it and thedelicacy of the hands of those who have been watering, sowing and harvesting for years. The soil is understood as topography, as a smaller-scale territory: support, pace, rhythm, path for humans, drainage for water and foothold for plants and insects; free surface: soft, porous, permeable or stone composition, horizontal design, graphic sign for those observingfrom up there at the top. Will the action be permanent? We will seek shade from the sun to shelter us while we work, to protect the most delicatecrops, to filter the air and snow, to gather us when it rains. Will the action be ephemeral? The work will be horizontal and shared, especially in the initial observation and designphase, so that each participant can contribute according to their own interests and thefascination that the place will certainly inspire in us.
